Underground Faulted Circuit Indicators

Underground Faulted Circuit Indicators are classified as either Electronic or Mechanical. Electronic units have automatic reset and offer remote LED indication through fiber optic cables. All Power Delivery Products faulted circuit indicators with LED indication can be upgraded to SCADA. Units are installed with a shotgun stick or gloves. Mechanical FCIs first appeared over sixty-five years ago and offer an economical alternative for fault indication. These units must be reset manually by line personnel. Hotstick installable mechanical units are available.

The Load Tracker LM offers state of the art design and capability for underground faulted circuit indicators. These units sense circuit load and automatically adjust their trip rating to coordinate with other protective devices on the system. The trip rating at peak load is held for 72 hours for complete inrush immunity. The Load Tracker LM is self powered by a twenty year shelf life lithium cell with over 1200 hours of flashing time. All Load Tracker-LM FCIs have an automatic time reset (typically 4 or 8 hours) and can also be reset manually with a magnet. A current reset option is also available.

The Closed Core CT design offers the highest degree of proximity immunity available. Bright LED indication is standard; however, acoustic or audible models are also available.

The Fixed Trip Load Tracker FCI offers a discrete trip setting from 60 amps to 2000 amps. The closed core CT sensor provides immunity to adjacent circuit interference as close as 2.3 inches at 10 kA. The Protection Mated trip response curve mimics the slope of many circuit protective devices, such as fuse links, reclosers, and circuit breakers providing a product designed to respond to fault conditions.

The FCI 222 series Type M leads line crews to the fault with LED indication, either local or remote. Discrete trip ratings can be specified in addition to three unique time current response curves. The units will automatically reset by time (typically 4 hours) and can also be reset manually with a magnet. Type M units are self powered by a 20 year shelf life lithium cell with over 900 hours of flashing time. An economical Three Phase solution is available.

The economical and reliable design was the first FCI ever produced and consists of a closed core yoke attached to the indicator housing. The indicator housing contains a rotor which is painted two colors, one red for tripped indication and one black for non-tripped.

This unique economical design consists of a closed core yoke with an attached indicating housing. The indicating housing consists of a glass tube containing a non-freezing liquid solution consisting of fine red particles and an iron spring agitator. As fault current passes, the iron spring is excited and agitates the red color to indicate a fault. The red particles settle to the bottom within 4 to 8 hours indicating clear solution or no fault.
